Thanksgiving 2006

Let
us all gather to be thankful and enjoy a human tradition this year, for who
knows how long it will be before someone gets the bright idea to outlaw such a
federally sanctioned celebration of obviously “religious” foundations. Actually, it would probably take more than
the bright idea, but then there are many accomplices to such bright ideas. Those who would have us remove our National
Motto, “In God We Trust” from our coinage and anything else that matters, for
example. They would be willing
accomplices, would they not?
In
the meantime, let us be truly thankful for the many bounties bestowed on each
and every one of us. Let the number of
those who go hungry in this country this year be greatly decreased from
previous years. That is an honorable
goal for everyone to shoot for. Let the
number of those who are ignorant of their true American culture also be
decreased. Let the number of those
without close family and friends, yet find comfort in the generosity of others
be increased.
By
the way, Thanksgiving IS a religious holiday.
The whole idea of being thankful for anything has religious roots. This country was settled by people seeking
religious freedom, and our laws were formed to insure that privilege. Be thankful that enough of the Christian
ideals that went into those laws still remain to give us at least a semblance
of religious freedom unequaled elsewhere in the world.
Let
us be thankful for our ancestors who wisely turned the economics of this young
country from that of a communist approach to a much wiser free capitalist
system. Let us also pray for guidance
to steer us away from returning the system to that which has never worked in
the history of man. (A quick check of
the journals kept from the time when America first came to be will illustrate
the importance of getting that part of our history right.)
Let
us be thankful for the brave men and women who have served and are serving this
nation’s necessary calls to battle so that the bulk of us may remain here and
reap the bounties of our blessings.
Have
a very happy and safe Thanksgiving, and God bless you one and all!
