State legislatures elected U.S. Senators until 1913, when the Seventeenth
Amendment changed that to the direct election of Senators by the people. Many believe this to be a mistake that
seriously damaged the overall checks and balances set in place by the
Constitution. United States Senators
are elected for a six-year term. Every
two years approximately one-third of the Senate is up for re-election or
replacement. The Founders never
intended for our legislators to become career politicians. They are supposed to be public
servants. How many of these people do
